The Devil’s canyon is located in the narrowest part of the Hérault gorges, very close to the village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Only about 50 km from Montpellier, you will be seduced by this amazing environment. Indeed, the architecture of the gorge and the surrounding vegetation create an unreal atmosphere.

This playful course will satisfy all the desires of the participants; those who wish to be carried along by the water and those who wish to experience strong sensations. This canyon has no obstacles in its progression. It offers about ten jumps, a zip-line and an abseil.

This itinerary is suitable for everyone, from beginners to advanced. With friends or family with children, you will enjoy jumping in the water, defying the currents and admiring the beauty of the natural landscape.

Description of Devil's Canyon in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

The Devil’s Canyon is an ideal site for initiation; children and beginners cantake their first steps in canyoning and discover a serene and relaxed atmosphere. This aquatic and playful course meets everyone’s requirements: savour the tranquillity of the river or choose to jump, abseil and thus bring more thrills to the activity.

For those who love jumping and diving, the Devil’s canyon has a dozen of them, ranging from 1 to 10 metres. You can also have fun on a splash zip-line and abseil.

The location of the Devil’s canyon and the narrowness of its gorges mean thatthe water level is always constant. The canyoning activity can therefore be carried out throughout the summer, it never dries out.

Another advantage? The water is warm. This is great news for participants who prefer to enjoy the activity calmly. What a pleasure to be able to lounge in a temperate river!

You will fall under the spell of this canyon, which is a must in the region; admire the green nature and atypical landscapes. Our passionate instructors will show you exceptional panoramas. Be prepared to be amazed !

Programme

Schedule of the day

The Devil’s canyon activity is very easy. Departures are at 9 am or 2 pm. Participants must go to the meeting point, get equipped and walk for one minute to the beginning of the canyon.

The instructor in charge of the group and its safety will bring all the necessary equipment for the descent: helmets, harnesses, wetsuits and neoprene socks, waterproof bags and canisters, ropes, descenders and carabiners. It is important to give your height and weight before the trip to our office; this will help us to prepare the equipment.
Participants should wear a swimming costume and closed shoes. Please also consider packing a lunch so that you can rest during a gourmet break.

The activity lasts 3 hours; enjoy every moment! The descent of the Devil’s Canyon combines thrills for those who want them, aquatic hiking and swimming in white water. All the workshops can be bypassed; feel free to simply enjoy the scenery and the warmth of the water during this water descent.

Once you have completed the course, allow about 5 minutes to walk back to the vehicles.
You will leave this experience with great memories and smiles on your faces!

Driving directions

From Ganges (50 mins), take direction Laroque and go to Saint-Martn-de-Londres by the road D986. From Saint-Martin-de-Londres take direction Viols-le-Fort through the road D32. Go to Puéchabon. After exiting Puéchabon, turn right on the road D27E1 in direction of Pont du Diable. Cross the Pont du Diable and turn right to pass in front of the cave of Clamouse by the road D4. The carpark is on the D4 2kms North from the Devil Bridge or 1.2 kms South of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert.

From Montpellier (50 mins), take road N109 then highway A750 direction Millau / Lodève. Take exit 58 towards Saint-André-de-Sangonis / Montpeyroux and continue on the road D4 to Saint-Jean-de-Fos via Laganas. Then follow the direction of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. See carpark above.

From Anduze (1h15), go South through Quissac, Valflaunès & Saint-Martin-de-Londres. Then see above.

What to do around

The Devil’s canyon is located in a natural environment that is ideal for outdoor activities. Nearby, discover the Devil’s Bridge, also known as the bridge over the Hérault, a Romanesque structure. On the site, you can swim (under supervision in July and August) and enjoy the Mediterranean sun.
 
Don’t miss a walk through Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
 
Want to visit a city? Go to Montpellier! This multifaceted metropolis will win over all travellers. It offers all the advantages of a big city; shopping centres, theatres, entertainment, transport, etc. It also promises all the authenticity of a small Occitan town; picturesque and pedestrian streets, terraces and typical restaurants, cultural heritage, etc. In short, you will fall under the charm of Montpellier ! A few kilometres away, you can also admire the beautiful coastal towns and their sandy beaches:
 
– Sète: discover the Thau lagoon, a real setting of biodiversity. Take a walk around the pleasant marina.
 
– Carnon: stroll along its port and take a moment to observe the boats. Allow yourself a relaxing break on the Petit Travers beach.
 
– Palavas-les-Flots: stroll through this seaside resort, which was built in an 18th century fort. You will be seduced by the dynamism of this small town and the warm welcome of its inhabitants.
