A sporting underground day for a magnificent journey out of time.

The bowels of the Cévennes welcome you to experience a sport caving activity in the Fausse Monnaie cave. In the commune of Mas-de-Londres, this cave is aimed at an already experienced public or at sportsmen in search of new sensations.

The guides of the Bureau des Moniteurs will accompany you during a day punctuated by a series of abseils and rope climbs, handrails crossing abysses or the passage of narrow passages. You will advance in impressive rooms and will be amazed by the beauty of this unknown underground world.

Located about ten kilometres from the Pic Saint-Loup, the Fausse Monnaie cave is one of the most spectacular in the region. The most curious will be able to listen to the legend surrounding this cave; why is it called that? Be patient; you will find out more during your excursion.

Description of speleology in the Fausse Monnaie cave

The sport caving course in the Fausse Monnaie cave guarantees you an intense day dedicated to the exploration of the underground world. You will learn many interesting things about this outdoor sport. This cave is particularly famous and recognised as one of the most beautiful in the region.

You will be taken on an unforgettable journey out of time. You will admire the grandeur of nature and feel the peace that this place expresses. The underground atmosphere is calm and relaxing; take a real break from your daily routine.

For your safety, our guides supervise the activity from start to finish and are available to answer your questions or assist you if necessary. They know the route and the nooks and crannies of the Cevennes mountains perfectly, so you can leave with peace of mind.

Participants with an advanced level will be able to improve and exceed their limits; physical challenge guaranteed! If you are sporty, but have not done caving before, they will give you all the instructions and advice so that you can quickly become independent.

Caving is a complete activity, as it combines the sporting aspect, the physical challenge and the discovery of an unusual universe in the heart of a unique natural environment.

Programme

Schedule of the day

The meeting point is set at 10 am between the participants and the instructors. It’s a 10-minute walk to the start of the course.

What is the programme once underground? You will go down shafts, climb up ladders or ropes, go through narrow passages, etc. You will reach large chambers; take your time to get to the top. You will reach large rooms; take your time to observe the strange concretions (limestone formations). You will be amazed by all the surprises that this magical world will offer you, hidden from view.

Our instructors in the Hérault valley provide the technical equipment necessary for the activity: helmets, headlamps, harnesses, wetsuits, ropes, double lanyards, descenders, carabiners and safety straps. Participants should wear comfortable sports shoes and clothing. Also remember to pack a lunch and at least 2 litres of water per person. There will be a picnic break underground, a time for rest and sharing.

In total, the activity lasts 5 hours; you will come out tired, but with a lot of memories. A 10-minute walk back to the vehicles will be undertaken.

Driving directions

Access from Montpellier
From Montpellier, take the direction of Ganges on the D986. 15 min after passing Les Matelles, you will arrive at a roundabout. You will park on the right just after the third exit (direction Viols-le-fort, D113) of this roundabout. Allow 15/20 minutes from Montpellier.

Access from Cap d’Agde – Gignac – Bézier
From Cap d’Agde, take the A75, then the A750 and exit at Gignac. Take the direction of St Martin de Londres on the D32. Pass Aniane, Puechabon, then Viols le Fort. At the end of Viols le Fort, take the D113 on the right. After passing Viols en Laval you will come to a roundabout. Park on the left just before it.

What to do around

In the surroundings of the Fausse Monnaie cave, discover the typical Cevennes villages.

Saint-Martin-de-Londres welcomes you in a picturesque setting where life is good. This medieval village in the heart of the garrigue is set in a rich and varied environment. Stroll through the narrow streets inside the ramparts, then take a break for a bite to eat in the village square, in the shade of the majestic plane trees.

Then go to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. This city of character will offer you a unique interlude. Wander through the steep streets and admire the Gellone Abbey, a true gem of Languedoc Romanesque art. Have a look at the Romanesque facades, the Saint-Laurent church or the Château du Géant.

Continue your journey south to the charming city of Montpellier, only 30 kilometres away. You will be seduced by this active metropolis; combine cultural visits, shopping, nightlife and gastronomy. You will find excellent restaurants, wine bars and lively bars.
