Located above the Roquette Castle, this introductory caving route is particularly suitable for beginners and even children. Dive into the heart of the Cévennes, between the departments of Hérault and Gard, and discover a playful route.

More than 650 metres of underground crossing await you without any specific difficulty. You will evolve in a mysterious universe full of surprises: the bowels of the Earth!
Move from room to room, cross small narrow passages and a 10-metre abseil; you will learn the basic techniques of caving.

Our team of specialised and passionate instructors will accompany you throughout the activity. Don’t hesitate to ask them any questions you may have and to ask for their help if you feel the need. They will help you to progress and make you autonomous.

This cave, punctuated with concretions, will take you on a journey into an unknown and surprising world. Concretions are formations created by water and minerals; the best known are stalactites and stalagmites. You will be impressed by the richness of these underground gems!

Description of caving in the Roquette cave

Opting for a caving trip in the Roquette cave has many advantages. This trip is ideal for families; children can have fun and learn about caving in complete peace of mind. There are no complicated passages and our guides ensure that the route is suitable for all levels.

This route is known for being original and fun; you won’t see the time pass! This underground adventure will allow you to discover the superb Cevennes region; you will be seduced by the wild and authentic landscapes.

The Bureau des Moniteurs team offers group rates (already constituted) from 6 people. Don’t wait any longer, get your fellow adventurers together and treat yourself to an introduction to caving in the Roquette cave.

Children love to put on their explorer’s gear and become observers in the strange underground cavities.

Programme

Schedule of the day

Participants meet the instructor in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort at 9 am or 2 pm, depending on your reservation. They will follow him to the cave car park.

Once you arrive, you will have to prepare your backpacks and technical equipment (provided by the Bureau des Moniteurs): helmets, headlamps, harnesses, wetsuits, ropes, double lanyards, waterproof bags and canisters, descenders, carabiners and safety straps. Participants should wear comfortable sports shoes and clothing; it is important to be comfortable in your movements. We also advise you to bring water and a snack, especially if you are doing it with children.

How does the caving activity in the caves of La Roquette work? A 5 minute approach walk will be necessary to reach the entrance of the cave. You will start the underground crossing; small abseiling, passage from room to room and narrow sections. Once the caving is over, a 5 minute walk back to the vehicles is required.

Count on a total of 2.5 hours of activity; enjoy this time underground to the full! This initiation will allow you to learn a new discipline with experienced professionals. Have you already practised caving? Take the opportunity to improve your skills and experience other underground adventures

Driving directions

From Ganges (20 mins), go to Saint-Hippolyte-du-fort then meet the instructor in the Super U parking lot.

From Montpellier (1 hour), follow Saint-Gély-du-Fesc, Saint-Martin-de-Londres, Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois, Montoulieu then Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort.

From Anduze (20 mins), follow Durfort, and Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort.

What to do around

The central location of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort allows you to easily explore the Cévennes region.

Just 10 minutes away, visit the typical village of Ganges. Stroll through the narrow streets and admire the 17th century aristocratic houses. On Friday mornings, do some shopping at the market, reputed to be the most beautiful in the region. Taste the excellent local products !

South of Ganges, drive through Brissac and take a refreshing break at the bridge of Saint-Étienne d’Issensac. Built in the Middle Ages, it spans the Hérault and has retained 3 of its original 5 arches. Classified as a historical monument since 1948, it is used as a bathing area during the summer.

To the north of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, make a stopover in Anduze, an active and charming little town. You will be seduced by the beauty of its landscapes, the diversity of its hiking trails and the richness of its cultural heritage. There is something for everyone!

Finally, less than an hour’s drive away, head south and visit Montpellier. This metropolis in the Hérault region welcomes you in a calm but dynamic atmosphere. You won’t be bored; restaurants, bars, nightlife, shopping, tourist sites, etc. Let yourself be carried away by the gentle way of life in Montpellier!
